Heiman, McNamara Shore Up AOW Honors

ST. PAUL, Minn. - It was a historic week for each of Concordia's Athletes of the Week, as Craig Heiman (Basketball) and Maggie McNamara (Volleyball) earned the nod in leading the Golden Bears. Heiman helped CU defeat defending National Champion #16 Winona State for the first time in a 30 game series history against the Warriors while McNamara was named the National Player of the Year by two separate awards as she led CU to repeat as Division II Champions.

Craig HeimanCraig Heiman (F, 6-5, 220, Jr., Marshall, Wis. / Marshall HS) averaged 20 points and 5.5 rebounds while dishing out five assists and three steals to lead Concordia to a pair of road NSIC wins to start conference play. Heiman, usually a long range sharp shooter, displayed his power inside in the two wins, only hitting one three-pointer for the weekend. The most impressive part of his 40 point weekend was helping Concordia outscore #16 Winona State 56-26 in the paint in CU’s first-ever win over the Warriors in a 30 game series history. In the win over Winona State, Heiman dropped in 25 points, all from inside the arc as he shot 10-17 from the field and 5-6 at the stripe while collecting a team-high eight rebounds. The night before, he scored 15 points and distributed four assists in a win at Upper Iowa.

Maggie McNamara sets against Grand Valley StateMaggie McNamara (Setter, Jr., Zumbrota, Minn. / Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) picked up two national Player of the Year awards last week and led her team to a National Championship.  Prior to the Golden Bears hosting the NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament, McNamara was named the AVCA National Player of the Year, as voted on by the nation’s coaches, and also the Ron Lenz Daktronics National Player of the Year, as voted on by NCAA Division II and III sports information directors.  These are the highest awards available to an athlete and the first time that a Concordia athlete received the award. 

Maggie averaged 13.42 assists per set as the Golden Bears went through the National Tournament with a 3-0 record on their way to a second consecutive national title.  She had 161 assists on the weekend to go with 30 digs and four serving aces.  Maggie sealed her lead with the most assists per set in the nation for the third straight season with a final mark of 13.41 this season.
