Heiman, Meierotto Earn Athlete of the Week Nod

Nov. 17

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia athletic department has announced that Craig Heiman (Basketball) and Whitney Meierotto (Volleyball) have been named the CU Athletes of the Week. Meierotto earns the award for the second consecutive week.

Craig Heiman lays in two of his 16 points against Georgia StateCraig Heiman (F, 6-5, 240, Jr., Marshall Wis. / Marshall HS) led the NABC Classic in scoring, pouring in 60 points in three days for a 20.0 average against three Division I opponents at Williams Arena over the weekend. He was the only Division II player named to the NABC Classic All-Tournament Team. As the only Division II team in the four team classic, Heiman displayed his long range shooting as well as an inside power game, often out-muscling the Division I posts that were matched up against him. On Friday night at Minnesota, Heiman lit up the Gophers for 26 points and helped CU claw back into the game, narrowing a 21 point MN lead to just 11 with 7:19 to play. He scored 16 the next night as Concordia nearly upset Georgia State University before throwing in 18 to lead CU in a loss to Bowling Green on Sunday. For the weekend, Heiman buried 11 three-pointers and had 15 rebounds – eight on the offensive glass. He also made 9-11 at the line, a .818 rate. Last year’s NSIC scoring leader (overall) officially starts the year with a 17.0 average this year with Friday’s game at Minnesota counting as an exhibition for CU but was Minnesota’s official opener.

Whitney Meierotto against Truman State earlier this yearWhitney Meierotto (Washburn, Wis.) marked her 14th double double of the season on Saturday evening, leading the Golden Bears to an undefeated NSIC season with a win over St. Cloud State.  Meierotto averaged 5.00 kills per game, totaling 15 in the match, and came up with 14 digs.  Her 15 kills came in 23 attempts, with just two errors on the night.  She also had four block assists.  Meierotto led the league in hitting percentage, kills per set and points per set last week.
