Three Student-Athletes Receive High Academic Honors

Nov. 05

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The 2009 Golden Bears have three players selected to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District V Second Team, the most the Concordia football team has produced in a single year in the program's history. All three selections were juniors, punter T.G. Schoenberg (Woodbury, Minn.), center Israel Lopez (Milwaukee, Wis.) and defensive tackle John Borchert (Champlin, Minn.). All three earn the honor for the first time in their respective careers.

The ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA award is nominated and voted on by the Sports Information Directors in each region, and all first team selections advance to the All-America ballot. Concordia has not had a football student-athlete selected to the All-Disctrict team since quarterback Kole Goodchild in 2007 when he was a first team selection. Concordia's only other football player voted to either the first or second team was linebacker Brad Scherer, who was a Second Team Academic All-American (All-District First Team) in 2006 while he was also an All-District Second Teamer in 2005. Scherer is CU's only ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American in school history.

This year's three selections is impressive as it doubles the amount of All-District selections for Concordia football history.

TG SchoenbergSchoenberg is majoring in communications and carries a 3.35 grade point average while also pursuing a writing minor. He has earned Dean's List recognition multiple times during his academic career at Concordia. The reigning All-NSIC South Division First Team Punter from 2008 is once again back in the mix for league-leading punting duties. He carries the third-ranked punting average in the league and this year will become a two-time NSIC All-Academic selection when the league announces the award this fall. He was a D2Football.com All-NSIC Preseason First Team Punter as well and has lived up to his billing throughout the 2009 campaign. He has earned CU Male Athlete of the Week honors as well as being tabbed the Special Team's Player of the Week by the CU coaching staff for his performance at Augustana. After Concordia, T.G. aspires to open a chain of restaurants called "Schoenburger's."

Israel LopezLopez is a political science major carrying a 3.69 grade point average and is also a writing minor. He plans to pursue law school following his Concordia career and aspires to become a lawyer. Like Schoenberg, he will also become a two-time NSIC All-Academic selection this fall. He has been a fixture on Concordia's offensive line in his three years of action while also redshirting his freshman year in 2006.

John BorchertBorchert is another three year contributor to the football team and will also become a two-time NSIC All-Academic selection this fall. Borchert is a criminal justice major with the highest GPA of the three honorees at 3.76 while also pursuing a psychology minor. He plans to work towards a career in state and local law enforcement and has been a Dean's List honoree throughout his academic career at Concordia. Borchert has played in 31 games in his three seasons along CU's defensive front and in 2009 has been named the CU Defensive Lineman of the Week six times in the last two seasons including three times in the last four weeks of his junior season.
