ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Golden Bears are headed to Winona on Wednesday, November 4 to take on the regular season NSIC Champs, the Winona State Warriors in a 6:00 p.m. soccer matchup in the first round of the NSIC/U.S. Bank Soccer Tournament. CU enters the game with an overall record of 8-9-3, 5-6-2 NSIC. The Warriors are 15-4-0 overall, 12-1-0 NSIC. COMPLETE RELEASE
Winona State won their sixth straight and ninth overall NSIC Regular Season Championship. The Warriors are currently ranked sixth in the NCAA Central Region Rankings.
Winona is coming off of a 1-0 victory over U-Mary on Saturday and a 2-1 victory over Northern State on Sunday.
Last season was the first year since 2001 that the Golden Bears did not make the post-season tournament. CU finished 11th in the NSIC with a 6-14 overall record, 3-10 in the NSIC.
In 2008 Winona won the regular season NSIC title, and lost to Minnesota State in the finals of the conference tournament 1-0. Winona went on to lose 3-1 to Regis University in the semi-final match of the NCAA Regional Championship.
In their first meeting this season the Warriors defeated the Golden Bears 3-1 in a game played in Winona. The only goal scored by CU was a penalty goal scored by freshman Kim Sauberlich.
The Golden Bears have not had much luck against the Warriors. Currently CU is 1-10 against Winona.
