Janes, Wheelock Named NSIC Players of the Week

Oct. 30– Concordia freshman Kari Janes has been named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week and junior Keyton Wheelock has been tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Bears to a pair of 1-0 wins last weekend.

Kari Janes scored game winning goals on consecutive days to propel the Golden Bears into the NSIC Tournament as the seventh seed. Heading into the weekend, Concordia was in ninth place but the team advanced to the tournament as Janes provided the game winner in a 1-0 game in the 88th minute against Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday before lofting in a shot from over 25 yards out to beat Wayne State in the 27th minute on Sunday afternoon in another thrilling 1-0 victory.

Keyton Wheelock recorded back-to-back shutout victories in the net to help the Golden Bears jump from ninth to a seventh place tie in the conference standings, earning a trip to the NSIC Tournament. Her solid performances give her six shutouts on the season and improve her record to 4-9-2 in the net. She recorded nine saves on the weekend, facing 20 total shots, ten in each game. She had five saves in a 1-0 win over SMSU and four saves in a 1-0 win against Wayne State, facing a barrage of great scoring chances late in the first half against the Wildcats.  It is the second time in her career Wheelock has earned the honor.
