ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Bemidji, Minn. to compete in the NSIC Championships at Greenwood Golf Course this weekend. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, October 24. The women's 6k is set to begin at 11 a.m. while the men will follow with the start of their 8k race at 12 p.m. COURSE MAP
The #10 Augustana Viking's women head into the tournament as the reigning conference champions while the Minnesota State Mavericks will also try to defend their title on the men's side. Minnesota Duluth's women's team heads into the tournament ranked 12th in the country. Last year both the men's and women's team placed 10th overall at the NSIC Championships. For the first time this season the CU women's runners will compete for a team score. Coach Breitbarth has added three runners from the Golden Bear track and field team to run at the NSIC Championships.
Jacob Womeldorf (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) strides into the tournament as the leading runner for the Golden Bears and has a chance to earn All-Conference honors.
Coach Breitbarth is looking for his team to improve on their finish from last season. "Jake really has a chance to finish in the top-10 in the men's race and could earn All-Conference honors this season."
Breitbarth also added, "The addition of Jake and Andy really gave our team a shot in the arm and have helped our team improve this season."
Freshman Andrew Wacha (Rockford, Minn.) has added a lot of depth to the men's team this fall. Wacha finished the Pine hill Invite in 31st place with a personal best time of 28:33.
Runners who finish in the top-10 of the race will earn All-NSIC first team honors, and those who finish 11-20 will earn All-NSIC second team.
Bemidji State University last hosted the NSIC Championship race in 2002. Former CU runner Emily Shoop won the conference championship with a first place finish that year.
