ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University athletic department has chosen junior Calvin Simon (Football) and freshman Cassie Haag (Volleyball) as this week's CU Male and Female Athletes of the Week. Simon earns the nod for the first time in 2009 and second time in his career while Haag earns the nod for the first time in her career. Haag's breakout effort has helped spark CU to a 17-0 start including a win over nationally ranked #14 Southwest Minnesota State.

Calvin Simon (WR, 6-2, 215, Jr., Shakopee, Minn. / Shakopee HS) was a workhorse of a wide receiver on Saturday on the road, producing a career-high 10 receptions going for 153 yards and a pair of key third quarter touchdowns to help bring Concordia back from a 14-0 hole to a tie score at 20 at the end of three quarters. Simon’s first touchdown was an 80 yarder down the right sideline on a half back option pass from running back Sam Campbell. The second touchdown came from 10 yards out, showing Simon has the versatility to go deep and haul in clutch passes in big spots. The junior has now caught a pass in all 26 games he has played for Concordia with the 153 yard performance being his fifth career 100 yard effort, fourth career multi-touchdown game and the first time in 2009 he has accomplished either feat.

Concordia freshman Cassie Haag (MH, 5-11, Fr., Plymouth, Minn. / Southwest Christian HS) stole the spotlight last week as the Golden Bears tacked on three additional season wins to improve to 17-0 on the year.  Haag was impressive offensively with 3.56 kills per set and a .438 hitting average, committing only four errors through the combined three matches.  She also stuck out as a blocking beacon, tallying 13 blocks on the week for an average of 1.44 per set.  She had an 11 kill (no errors), nine block night on Friday evening.  Haag finished in double figures for kills in all three matches.  Haag currently leads the NSIC in hitting percentage (.427) by nearly 30 points.
