ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University Men's and Women's Golf teams are both on the road this weekend as they travel to separate locations to compete. The men's golfers are on their way to Gothenburg, Neb. to compete in a Sunday, Monday tournament at the annual NSIC/RMAC Crossover. The women will travel south to compete in the Mustang Invite against NSIC foes in Marshall, Minn. in a tournament hosted by Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday and Sunday.
The CU men's team enters their annual tournament against regional foes from the RMAC which always provides tough competition for the Golden Bears. After their performance at the RMAC championships the Golden Bears finished just shy of a berth into the NCAA tournament. CU had to finish in front of Colorado Christian, Colorado Mines and Regis to push themselves into the big dance but finished just short of their goal. Then sophomore Nick Jarrett (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) had a strong showing for the Golden Bears finishing 15th overall out of 75 golfers shooting +14 in a 54 hole, three round event with a low round of 73 in the first 18 holes.
The men's team followed the RMAC championships up with a strong performance at the NSIC Warm-up, winning that event before the NSIC championships. This tournament provided the men's squad a great tune-up as post-season implications are usually always associated with the tough competition. The Golden Bears look to have a strong showing at the RMAC championships again this season as it will be their final tournament before entering the NSIC Championships.
The women's team will enter their 8th tournament hosted by Southwest Minnesota State in seven seasons. The Golden Bears finished in 3rd place as a team last year at the Mustang Invite. Kaytie Spangler (Jr., Ely, Minn.) tied her career-low round score of 74 last year at the Mustang Invite. Spangler shot a 74 on the first day of the tournament and helped boost CU to a second place position after the first day on the links. She went on to shoot an 80 on day two and finished the tournament in 5th place overall while the team finished 3rd.
Stay tuned this weekend for results and re-caps of the events from Marshall, Minn. and Gothenburg, Neb.
