MARSHALL, Minn. -- Despite shooting a team-low +58, the Golden Bear winning streak came to a close as the CU women's golf team finished third place out 17 teams at the Mustang Invite at Marshall Golf Club in a two round tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Senior Jacquelyn Hauser (Caledonia, Minn.) shot a team season best two round score of 151 (75+76) to finish seven over par to tie for second out of 102 women's golfers.
Hauser's first round score of 75 wasn't even the top score on the team, either, as Concordia displayed strength at the top of their lineup card. Sophomore Kaytie Spangler (Ely, Minn.) fired a 74 in the first round to tie for the day one lead in leading Concordia to a second place start after 18 holes at the Par 72, 5,936 yard course. Spangler's 74 equals her season-high, which also happens to lead the team. She had fired a 74 in the second round of the Augie Invite to start the season as well.
Spangler came in with an 80 this afternoon, however, to finish tied for fifth with a ten over par (154). Hauser, meanwhile, was only two strokes from taking home medalist honors, which went to UNO's Erin Ommen who paced the tournament field with a low round of 72 today after shooting a 77 on the first 18, finishing five over par (149).
Depth continued to be a team strength, as CU had five golfers finish in the top 29.
Upper Iowa University stole the show, shooting a 303+309=612, finishing 36 strokes over par as a team, 12 strokes ahead of second place Nebraska-Omaha. UNO was 10 strokes ahead of third place Concordia. The Golden Bears shot 313+321=634. Their first round team score of 313 was their second lowest round of the season.
On the year, Spangler and Hauser continue to battle for the top score on the squad. Spangler is averaging a 77.7 while Hauser has turned in an average of 77.8. Both golfers' scores are +6 relative to par and each have finished in the top five in all three events of the season.
Concordia looks to continue their top-flight level season September 27 and 28 at the Red River Invitational in Fargo, N.D.
