Sep. 15

LAKE ELMO, Minn. -- The Concordia University women's golf team has already won more events in the 2008-09 season after two weeks of play than they had in the entire history of the program, taking first place at the Concordia University Fall Invitational held at Tartan Park Golf Club.

Concordia edged out North Dakota, now an NCAA Division I member, by one stroke. The teams were tied for the lead after the first round, both firing 330 yesterday. Today, Concordia shot a 321 to finish at 651 while UND shot 322 to finish at 652. The Golden Bears were +75 over par as a team in the two day event, which consisted of poor playing conditions yesterday.

The improved weather helped sophomore Kaytie Spangler (Ely, Minn.) improve her score by six strokes, shooting a 77 today to vault to a fourth place finish. Her final score was a 160, +16 over par.

Spangler was able to nudge her way ahead of senior Jacquelyn Hauser (Caledonia, Minn.), who finished tied for fifth with a final score of 78+83=161 (+17). Hauser was tied for second and only a stroke behind the leader after one round.

The first round leader, Megan Placko of Winona State, finished seventh after shooting an 86 in round two. The medalist honors went to Rachael Schmidt of Upper Iowa, who fired a tournament best 74 on day two to finish 79+74=153, nine strokes over par and three strokes ahead of the next competitor from North Dakota, Kristi Lucken.

Concordia received a boost with a balanced scorecard, as sophomore Molly Noser (Rochester, Minn.) tied for ninth (85+80=165, +21), senior Carley Paulseth (Moose Lake, Minn.) tied for 13th (84+82=166, +22) and junior Amanda Bearson (Lanesboro, Minn.) tied for 16th (86+82=168, +24).

The Golden Bears will look to keep their winning streak alive next weekend at the Mustang Invite hosted by Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minn.
