The Golden Bears' tenth year of NCAA Division II/NSIC membership kicked off last weekend, with junior Dan Schield (Cross Country) and freshman Emily Weimelt (Soccer) being named CU Athletes of the Week for their outstanding performances to open the 2008-09 season.
Schield, from Two Harbors, Minn., took third place overall at the St. Mary's Invite in Winona, Minn. on Saturday with a time of 23:23.4. While his time was a personal best for Schield, it was also the faster time ever for a male on the four mile course at St. Mary's.
Weimelt, a mid/forward from Lakeville, Minn., delivered a hat trick for the Golden Bears as they cruised to a 3-0 victory at St. Francis (IL) on Sunday in just her second career game. She netted three of her four shots attempted on goal and fired a team-high nine total shots in the game to lead a CU offense that out shot their opponent 28-3 in the shutout win.
