Carlson and Schoenberg Take First CU Athlete of the Week Awards For 2009-10 Season

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia University volleyballer Megan Carlson and football athlete T.G. Schoenberg have been named the first CU Athletes of the Week for the 2009-10 season.  The duo were the top-performing student-athletes for the Golden Bear athletic teams, who saw their first competitions of the season last week.

Megan CarlsonSophomore Megan Carlson (Andover, Minn., Andover HS / Marshall Univ.) was named Most Valuable Player of the West Florida Comfort Inn-vitational after putting up three double-doubles in four matches during her first weekend of play with the Golden Bears.  Carlson helped the top-ranked Golden Bears go 4-0 on the season with wins against two teams ranked in the top 15 nationally.  She totaled 56 kills (4.31/s) and 47 digs (3.62/s) on the weekend with a .255 hitting average.  Her kill total reached a high of 17 in a win against Florida Tech.  She notched double figures in kills in every match on the road trip.  while she picked up a season high 18 digs against #12 Central Missouri. 

Carlson's defensive effort also helped to give the Golden Bears a competitive advantage.  She picked up a season high 18 digs against #12 Central Missouri.  One of the team's leading serve receivers, Carlson committed only a single receiving error in 89 attempts.  She also had four service aces.

T.G. SchoenbergJunior specialist T.G. Schoenberg (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury HS) started off the season hot by punting a career-high nine times for a 43.9 yard average.  He forced seven fair catches, placing four inside the 20 yard line.  Two of his punts went over 50 yards, including a long boot of 60 yards.  His net average of 41.7 was even more impressive as he didn't allow UMD a punt return attempt. 

Schoenberg was a 2008 All-NSIC South First Team punter and a D2Football.com Preseason All-NSIC First Team (both divisions) selection.
