With the opening of the fall golf season just around the corner, Concordia University head golf coach Matt Higgins has announced that Kaytie Spangler (Ely, Minn.) has decided to transfer from Truman State University to join the Golden Bears for 2008-09. Spangler competed in the 2008 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships as a freshman last year.At the Division II Championships in Houston, Texas, Spangler tied for 36th after finishing as runner-up at the North Regional in Grand Forks, N.D. She was a member of the 2008 North All-Region squad and was named a 2008 NGCA All-Scholar selection as well. Her 4.0 grade point average as a freshman netted her honors on the 2007-08 Truman State President's List as well.
"I'm very excited to have Kaytie join our program," Higgins said. "Kaytie will be the third golfer coming in this year for us; and the second student-athlete that has transferred with NCAA National Golf Championship experience. She will step in and instantly contribute to our program. Kaytie is a very talented golfer that has proven she can play championship level golf in our region and on the national scene. She is also a great student and will be a leader both in the classroom and on the course."
During her prep career, Spangler was a 2007 MSHSL Class A Runner-Up, tying with current CU golfer Molly Noser. She was a four-time all-conference selection and was named the 2005 Mesabi Daily News Prep Girls Golfer of the Year.
Spangler joins a CU women's golf program that broke onto the national scene in recent years, sending an individual qualifier to nationals in 2006-07 before the team cracked the national rankings multiple times in 2007-08. Concordia has now had three individuals compete at the North Regional.
