Concordia University head football coach Mark Mauer has announced that quarterback Mitch Brecke (Plymouth, Minn.) has transferred to CU for the 2008 season. Brecke, who spent the previous three years at NCAA FCS member North Dakota State University, will be a junior for the Golden Bears."We are very excited to have Mitch join our program," commented Mauer. "He brings veteran leadership and a winning mentality to the quarterback position. We are expecting Mitch to compete for the starting quarterback position right away."
A redshirt as a freshman in 2005, Brecke saw action in 11 games during his two years on the field for the Bison, getting into nine games last year as a sophomore.
During his prep career at Maple Grove High School, Brecke was a two-time honorable mention all-state player, passing for 4,479 yards and 44 touchdowns. He earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Minnesota prep all-star game and led Maple Grove to an 8-3 record and section runner-up finish as a senior. As a junior, Brecke was the top-rated dual threat quarterback in the state by Minnesotapreps.com.
Brecke joins a Golden Bear football program with a tradition of great quarterback play, including Kole Goodchild, James McNear, Mike Allen and Jim Rubbelke. Last year's starter, Goodchild, graduated which leaves the position vacated and open for competition heading into fall camp.
