ST. PAUL, Minn. - The construction of Sea Foam Stadium continues to benefit Concordia University across the board with the CU softball team coming back to campus. Ground was broken on a new home field for the Golden Bear sluggers with the location being on Concordia Field, the former soccer field. The softball field is searching for a name and will be located adjacent to Barnes Field, home of the baseball team, directly to the west of and behind the Gangelhoff Center.
"This is exciting news as the new on-campus Sea Foam Stadium continues to have a ripple effect," said athletic director Tom Rubbelke. "The stadium has not even completed construction and already we are going to be seeing benefits. This is a great day for the University!"
The soccer team's departure from Concordia Field to the new Sea Foam Stadium allowed the University extra space and the dimensions of a Division II softball field fit perfectly into the alotted space.
The softball team will play their home games at the new field as early as the 2010 season with the hopes of playing their alumni game at the new site this fall at Homecoming, Saturday, October 3.
The Golden Bears have been playing their home games at Dunning Softball Complex, located a block east of campus in between campus and Griffin Stadium. They had an on-campus field that was used primarily for practice, Lutheran Memorial Field, but that was demolished for Sea Foam Stadium earlier this spring.
With softball returning to campus, all of Concordia's athletic teams will have an on-campus home, with the exceptions of golf and cross country, which have obvious limitations on where they are able to compete.
