The Golden Bears captured third in part due to the NSIC Champion volleyball and women's basketball teams, while women's golf finished second, baseball took third and men's basketball, men's golf and softball each tied for fourth. The volleyball team went on to win the league's first-ever team national championship on the women's side, capturing the second team national title in any sport, while the Winona State men's basketball team added their second Division II title in three years months later giving the league three team national champions.
The volleyball team has won five consecutive Northern Sun titles, appeared in five consecutive Sweet Sixteens (regional championship match), three Elite Eights (2003, 2005, 2007) and has been in two national championship matches (2003, 2007).
The women's basketball team and the baseball team each captured NSIC Tournament Championships, which are not factored into the all-sports award formula. For the women's basketball team, they successfully defended their league regular season and tournament championships from 2006-07, becoming the first women's basketball program in league history to defend both titles. They also have the most NCAA Tournament appearances among Concordia's 15 sports, with six consecutive postseason berths.
The baseball team's tournament title advanced them to their first-ever NCAA Regional, becoming the first men's team to qualify for an NCAA regional tournament in Concordia's nine years of Division II competition.
Concordia has now had a fall, winter and spring sport qualify for regionals in four of the last five years, with 2006-07 being the only exception when only fall and winter were represented.
Winona State and Minnesota Duluth are the only two institutions to score wins in the all-sports award since its inception in the 1999-2000 year, which is also when Concordia joined the league. UMD won the award in each of the first five years before leaving the Northern Sun for the North Central Conference.
With the NCC about to conclude its final year of existence as a league, the University of Minnesota Duluth will officially rejoin the Northern Sun for 2008-09, along with prior NCC members Augustana College, Minnesota State University, Mankato and St. Cloud State University.
The four additions will make the Northern Sun a 14 member league, undoubtedly adding to the degree of difficulty necessary to capture the all-sports award in future seasons.
