WAYNE, Neb. - Junior John Pimental put his mark on the first day of the 2009 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, winning the long jump with a school record leap of 23 feet, 6 inches.  The win gave the CU men 10 points and pushed them toward their current fourth place standing with 28.5 points.  The Championships wrap up with final races and another portion of field events tomorrow.  MEN'S DAY 1 RESULTS  -  WOMEN'S DAY 1 RESULTS

John Pimental became an NSIC champion for the second time this year, having also won the long jump at the NSIC Indoor Championships.  His mark of 23-6 not only increased his all-time career high, but also boosted the school record.  A high wind index during his jump will not allow for an NCAA provisional to be met, but still grants him the NSIC title.  Pimental will be one of four CU men racing in the finals of the 100m dash tomorrow.

Pacing the team in the 100m dash was Kawaskii Bacon, who took third place in the race with a time of 10.83.  The Golden Bears had four athletes make the final field of eight, giving them a good chance to pick up key points tomorrow.  Diahn Zeon finished in fifth place with a personal record time of 10.76s, followed by Pimental in seventh place with a personal record time of 10.95s.  Robert Spence took eighth place, running 11.04s.

Giving Concordia additional team points on the day was Zeon and Tre Sayles in the long jump, with Zeon placing fifth (22-7, 4 pts) and Sayles placing seventh (22-3.5, 2 pts).  Sayles gave the team 3.5 points after tying for fifth in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 3.5 inches.

Adam LeMay did not have a record-setting day in the pole vault, but performed well enough to provide the team with three points and a sixth place finish by clearing 15 feet, 1 inch.

CU will have two competitors in the 200m dash, with Zeon having taken second place (23.07s) and Bacon coming in at sixth place (23.12s).

Leading the men's standings is Minnesota State with 53 points.  Northern State has 49 points for second place and Bemidji State has a slight lead over the Golden Bears with 31 points.

The Concordia women garnered two points during the first day of the NSIC Championships.  Katie Johnson took seventh place in the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 7.5 inches.  Another notable performance came from Kaysee Nesmoe in the javelin throw.  Nesmoe set a new personal record and took tenth place with a throw of 101 feet, 10 inches.  Haylee Reed was just shy of putting up a point for the team, taking ninth place in the pole vault (10-4.75).
