Once again, Concordia's balance is proving to make them a regional power as they have the No. 2 and No. 3 golfers on the leaderboard. Junior Anne Martin (Ramsey, Minn.) fired a par, 72, in the first round and is second place in the 49 golfer field. Martin is three strokes off the lead as Upper Iowa's Rochelle Schmidt shot a 69 (-3).
Two strokes behind Martin is teammate, senior Jacquelyn Hauser (Caledonia, Minn.) who delivered a 74 (+2) on day one. Hauser has some distance from fourth place Leah Grozdanich of Minnesota State who shot a 78 (+6).
Concordia sophomore Kaytie Spangler (Ely, Minn.) posted an 82 (+10) and is tied for 12th and within striking distance of the top-10.
Martin was -2 after six holes as she birdied holes 4-5-6. But bogeys on the outside of that birdie streak prevented her from making a run at Ro.Schmidt for the lead. She was -1 on the front nine. On the back nine, Martin bogeyed three par four holes but birdied a par four and a par three and finished the day even.
Hauser was more consistent, producing 14 pars for the day, including eight on the back nine. She was +1 on the front and back. Her lone birdie came on the fifth hole, a par four. She closed her day out by posting pars on the final six holes.
Concordia resumes play tomorrow at Westward Ho Country Club. They are competing for the top three spots to advance to nationals. This is the first NCAA appearance for the Golden Bear women's golf team. Hauser is one of three individuals to compete as an individual for CU, going last year.
