ST. PAUL, Minn. - In the last scheduled Concordia athletic event at James Griffin Stadium, the Concordia offense marched to a 38-10 win over the defense in the 2009 Spring Game. The Golden Bears alternated series between their two quarterbacks from the 2008 season, as Mitch Brecke (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Spencer Ohm (Blooming Prairie, Minn.) split the action as signal callers.
The offense was in charge throughout as the defense scored eight of their 10 points in the fourth quarter.
It was Brecke that connected with receiver Calvin Simon (Shakopee, Minn.) and a dig route over the middle. After hauling in the pass 15 yards downfield, Simon took off for the endzone, gaining a two point bonus for the 20-plus yard touchdown reception. Brecke also connected with tight end Jake Wahl (Cudahy, Wis.) for a touchdown strike in the contest.
The Golden Bears mixed up their rushing attack between numerous ball carriers as Sam Campbell (Cary, Ill.), Jerry Shaw (Milwaukee, Wis.), Jordan Johnson (Oakdale, Minn.) and Dillon Grant (Forest Lake, Minn.) all had their moments. Grant broke free for a run between 30 and 40 yards, Johnson had a long run and a one yard TD plunge and Campbell sprung loose for a 30-plus yard TD run late in the game.
One of the reasons the offense held the defense to just 10 points was their elusive quarterback play as both Brecke and Ohm eluded the pass rush in the backfield multiple times, not allowing the defense to rack up sack points.
Defensively, Drew Tarnowski (Superior, Wis.) was able to get to the QB, recording a sack and a handful of tackles in the game.
The Golden Bears close out their long run at Griffin Stadium - the site of nearly all of their football action in the 40 years of program history.
The 2009 football season will be played at the brand new Sea Foam Stadium on campus. The stadium construction has progressed rapidly this spring and all plans point to a September 19 debut kickoff against Winona State in week four of the season.
