Spencer Ohm delivers a strike downfield to Calvin Simon; his O-Line kept him clean throughout the day

ST. PAUL, Minn. - In the first ever Concordia spring football game at Sea Foam Stadium, the Gold squad jumped out to a 14-0 lead at halftime and was able to hold off a late rally by the Navy team on a windy Saturday afternoon. Spencer Ohm and Calvin Simon led the Gold offense in the victory, hooking up for a short touchdown through the air as well as numerous big plays downfield. PHOTOS

The first touchdown came on the ground as Sam Campbell broke through the plain inside the five yard line behind his big offensive line. The second touchdown, also in the first half for the Gold team, was set up by more short yardage rushing by Campbell before Ohm connected with Simon in the back right corner of the end zone on a fade route to the corner. Simon out leapt his defender and hauled in the score.

Both squads played solid defensively, with highlights including a Micah Koehn interception; a Travis Meyer pass breakup downfield and aggressive play from both squads.

In the second half, the Navy squad came back strong behind rookie gun slinger James Peterson. Peterson found Charles Gilbert and Hayden Vavra downfield to set up the team in the red zone. Peterson found Gilbert in the corner of the end zone as Gilbert elevated over Jason McCalope to haul in the score. It was an excellent throw, into a strong wind and right on target for Gilbert, who was the only player that could've come up with the ball. Gilbert got one foot down in the corner of the end zone to put his squad on the board.

The Navy defense came up with a stop and got the ball back with under a minute to play, but a strong punt by T.G. Schoenberg backed them up. They did advance the ball to midfield but a late fourth down pass down the sideline to Gilbert was broken up by Cedric Okoi.
