ST. PAUL, Minn. - Two big performances by a pair of deserving student-athletes has led Concordia University to name Jake Schmidt (Baseball) and Molly Noser (Golf) the CU Athletes of the Week. Schmidt struck out 14 to break his own single season strikeout record while earning the victory to tie the CU career record while Noser tied for third at the NSIC Women's Golf Championships including a season low round of 73 to earn All-NSIC honors while helping CU clinch the NSIC Title.
Jake Schmidt produced his third consecutive start with 10 or more strikeouts by striking out 14 Bemidji State hitters en route to improving to 7-2 on the season. His 14 strikeouts broke his own single season strikeout record of 100 set last year and upping his season total to 103 in 2009. The victory tied the career wins record in a Concordia uniform as he improved to 23-8 as a Golden Bear while tying the school record with his 37th career start. Against BSU, Schmidt hurled his fifth complete game of the year allowing two runs while scattering six hits. He only needed 98 pitches in the gem and didn’t walk anyone improving his K-BB ratio to nearly 4-to-1. He also made a relief appearance against Minnesota State last Wednesday, striking out two batters in 0.2 scoreless. For the week, he struck out 16 over 7.2 innings and is the NSIC’s strikeout leader and among the NCAA Division II leaders. Also CU’s leadoff hitter, he hit .273 for the week with his 10th home run of the season, along with a pair of doubles.
Molly Noser's four round performance between the fall and spring portions of the NSIC Championships put her in a tie for third place on the final leaderboard. Noser fired a 73 in the third round to catapult herself into the upper echelon of Northern Sun women's golfers. Last year's NSIC Freshman of the Year continued her steady improvement in a breakthrough sophomore campaign by earning All-NSIC honors. Noser's strong play helped the Golden Bears win their first NSIC Women's Golf Championship title and the team was rewarded with a selection to the NCAA Regionals where Noser will continue to lead the women's golf team in postseason play.
