Schmidt and Schmikla Earn Athlete of the Week Honors

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University athletic department has announced that Jake Schmidt (Baseball) and Stephanie Schmikla (Softball) have been named the CU Athletes of the week for their performances on the field last week.

Jake SchmidtGolden Bear leadoff hitter Jake Schmdit (SP/CF/1B, 6-3, 205, Sr., R-R, Oakdale, Minn. / Tartan HS) parked five home runs in six games last week to help the Golden Bears to a 4-2 record in six Northern Sun games. For the week, he hit .400 with a .520 OBP and a 1.150 slugging pct. He drove in 11 runs and scored six. Playing centerfield in five games, he was error free with 14 putouts and an assist. In the other game, he started on the mound and struck out 10 batters over six innings with a 0.00 ERA against St. Cloud State. The 10 strikeouts put him within three of the Concordia career strikeout record. He has struck out 241 batters in his career, 71 so far in 2009. Schmidt parked three of his five home runs in a second game 14-3 win over Northern State on Wednesday. He finished with seven RBI in the game. He also homered in the first game of the day for a four home run day and delivered his fifth home run in the sixth inning of the third game of the weekend against SCSU to cut the Husky lead to 6-4 in the late innings.

Stephanie SchmiklaStephanie Schmikla (RHP, 5-5, So., Madison, Wis. / McFarland HS) went 3-1 last week 1.35 ERA, throwing four complete games and earning two saves as the Golden Bears went 5-1 against #24 Minnesota State and St. Cloud State.  Schmikla threw back-to-back complete games against the Mavericks, giving up only 13 hits in the doubleheader and knocking off the Mavericks in the second game.  In the two games that she did not start against St. Cloud State, Schmikla came in to clean up the final innings and increase her season save total to four.  She is a contact pitcher, forcing batters to put the ball in play.  She had seven strikeouts on the week.
