Apr. 10

LAKE CITY, Minn. - Paced by freshman John Potter (Woodbury, Minn.) who led the team with a 72, Concordia University moved up from 8th to 5th by shooting a 295 in the fourth of five rounds at the 2009-10 NSIC Men's Golf Championships at The Jewel Golf Club on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears jumped three teams and made up 11 strokes on fourth place Winona State and trail the Warriors by only seven strokes heading into the fifth and final round tomorrow. All four players who scored on the CU lineup shot 75 or better today, proving Concordia's balance and consistency shine through over the course of a grueling five round, 90-hole league championship that spans the fall and spring season. Potter is the fourth ranked golfer on the team at the NSIC Championships over four rounds, but trails leader Nick Jarrett (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) by only eight strokes to further prove the excellent display of balance on the 2009-10 Golden Bear men's golf squad. Potter has fired a 74-72 in the spring portion of the championships and is tied for seventh in the spring meet out of a 50 competitor field. Jarrett fired a 74 today after his 72 yesterday and has compiled a 303 through four rounds of play and is in 14th place in the leauge standings, playing +17 golf throughout.

Junior Cory Pike (Princeton, Minn.) is in 19th with a 308 after his 77 today.

Concordia also has the 21st and 22nd ranked golfers in the field, sophomore Jeremy Tetrault (Forest Lake, Minn.) in 21st (310) and Potter in 22nd (311).

Concordia's 295 was the second best fourth round score and the only other team to produce scores of 302 or better in three of the four rounds is championship leader Minnesota State.

Concordia trails fourth place Winona State by just seven strokes and is even within striking distance of third place St. Cloud State, trailing the Huskies by 24 strokes - a not likely, but still attainable goal to strive for.

The higher the Golden Bears are able to finish, the more their regional aspirations can come to fruition. They were ranked 10th in the latest NCAA regional poll behind league foes Bemidji State (9), Minnesota State (6) and St. Cloud State (3). The Beavers and Mavericks are battling for the league championship, separated by just nine strokes with MSU in the lead. BSU has made up 14 strokes in two days, though.
