LAKE CITY, Minn. - Sophomore Alex Timm (Hopkins, Minn.) continued his run of excellent play on Thursday as he tied for medalist honors by shooting two under par with a 69 in the 18 hole NSIC Warm-Up event hosted by Concordia University, St. Paul at The Jewel Golf Course. Timm's strong performance helped to lead a Golden Bear men's squad to a first place finish at the event with a school record 288. FULL RESULTS
The first place finish was technically the third in school history as CU won a four team invite on Apr. 15, 2007 also at The Jewel GC and they defeated Upper Iowa at the Golden Bear Invite at Tartan Park Golf Course on Oct. 1, 2005 in the first year of the program.
Timm just continues to perform at an exceptional level for CU, as he shot a career low round and earned medalist honors for the first time in his career. With the performance, Timm has taken the lead with the top scoring average on the team at 76.6 and has two straight top-five finishes. He leads the team in top-10 finishes with five.
Timm tied for medalist honors with Minnesota State's Bryant Black, who led the Mavericks to a second place finish with a team score of 293.
Black held a three stroke lead over Timm after the first nine holes, 36-33, but the players reversed their scores on the back nine with Timm coming back to tie for the top position.
While Timm was outstanding, he was not the only individual to have a great performance as sophomore Kyle Lewis (Forest Lake, Minn.) also shot a stroke under par, shooting a 70 to take third place. Lewis held a one stroke lead over Timm after the front nine after shooting a 35 and was consistent on the back nine with another 35. Lewis has the second highest scoring average on the squad, just 0.1 behind Timm at 76.7. Lewis produced his second top-five finish, has three top-10 finishes and four in the top-20.
A third sophomore, Nick Jarrett (Woodbury, Minn.), also shot well under his season average as he posted a 73 with a 35 on the front and a 38 on the back. Jarrett tied for 10th and lowered his season average to 77.1, just 0.5 behind Timm for the team lead.
The three sophomores have helped provide stability at the top of the lineup and are playing excellent golf down the stretch. If the NSIC Warm-Up event is a barometer for how the teams will perform in the final round of the NSIC Championships on Friday and Saturday, then the Golden Bears could make things interesting.
The men's team is a balanced group that features six golfers playing under +10 on the season with five more in the +10 to +16 range.
