Brenden Furrow and Katie Anderson Earn Athlete of the Week Honors

Mar. 31

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University athletic department has named Brenden Furrow (Baseball) and Katie Anderson (Softball) as this week's CU Athletes of the Week. The players each had outstanding hitting weeks on the diamond despite tough playing conditions and each earn the honor for the first time.

Brenden Furrow

Brenden Furrow (RF/1B, 6-0, 210, Sr., R-R, Johnston Iowa / Iowa Western CC / Johnston HS) found his hot bat last week in the cold weather at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, going 3-5 with seven RBI in the two game sweep of Minnesota Duluth in the cold, windy and snowy conditions. He continued his RBI streak into Concordia's sweep of UW-Superior at the Metrodome, where he went 4-8 with two more RBI against the Yellowjackets. On the week, Furrow went 8-13 with nine RBI, hitting .615 at the plate with a .923 slugging pct. He had three straight multi-RBI games (4, 3, 2) and two three-hit performances, going 3-3 in the first game of the week against UMD and 3-4 with a double and a triple in the first game of the UW-Superior doubleheader. Furrow has opened up a five game hitting streak and has raised his average from .267 on March 3 to his current .374 mark, during which he has hit safely in 13 of 16 games including nine multi-hit efforts. His 26 RBI on the season put him in the NSIC's top-10 as well.

Katie Anderson

Katie Anderson (OF, 5-4, Fr., Mendota Heights, Minn. / Henry Sibley HS) was a demon on wheels last weekend.  The freshman showed off her speed with five bunt singles and four stolen bases in CU splits with Bemidji State and Minnesota Duluth.  Anderson was instrumental in a tight game with the Beavers, leading off the fifth inning with a bunt single, stealing second and then scoring following a single to give CU a 2-1 lead.  The right fielder also made a spectacular running catch over her left shoulder to save a home run against the Bulldogs on Sunday.  Anderson batted .583 on the weekend, gaining seven hits in 12 at-bats.  She collected two RBI in the nine-hole and scored four runs.   Even more impressive, the rookie hit .625 with runners on base, was 5-for-6 with runners in scoring position (.833) and had a .667 success rate in advancing runners.
