Schmidt and Olstad Lock Up CU Athlete of the Week Honors

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia has announced that Jake Schmidt (Baseball) and Candace Olstad (Basketball) have been selected as the CU Athletes of the Week. Schmidt earns the honor for the second time while Olstad secures her sixth CU AOW award.

In his fourth start of the season, the reigning NSIC strikeout champion has produced his third double-digit strikeout performance with 11 against Grand View University. Schmidt scattered five hits and two walks in his second complete game of the year. He also surpassed the 200 career strikeout milestone with his effort and is now second on Concordia’s career strikeout list. Schmidt also had a dynamic week at the plate, helping his own cause on the mound by going 3-4 with two doubles, a home run, four RBI and two runs scored to give himself the run production he needed to secure the win. On the week, Schmidt was a .312 hitter (5-16) with a stolen base added to his two doubles and a home run. 

Candace Olstad is a six-time CU Athlete of the Week award winnerCandace Olstad (F, 6-0, Sr., Elgin, Minn.) wrapped up her Concordia basketball career with a run to the NSIC Tournament championship game last week.  En route to the title game, Olstad led her team to a win over #1 Minnesota State and was named to the All-Tournament Team.  She came up just shy of a double-double average with 11.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.  Olstad was 6-of-9 from the field with two of the team’s record-setting 13 three-pointers against the Mavericks for 15 points and nine rebounds.  She had a 10 point, 10 rebound double double against Augustana and was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder against the Huskies.

In her career, Candace scored 1,267 points with a 48.5% shooting average and had 676 rebounds.  She became a member of the 1,000 point club with a 27 point performance on December 21, 2008.  She ranks in the top five of several Concordia NCAA career lists.
