Senior Basketball Players Named CU Athletes of the Week

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Fresh off of their outstanding performances on senior night, Matt Cadwell (Basketball) and Candace Olstad (Basketball) have been named the CU Athletes of the Week, representing two of the three senior basketball players between the two teams. C.Olstad locks up the honor for the fifth time this season.

Matt Cadwell knocks down one of his eight three-pointers

Matt Cadwell (G, 6-3, 195, Sr., St. Paul, Minn. / South Dakota State / Cretin-Derham Hall) followed up Wednesday night’s two point performance against St. Cloud State by exploding for 46 in a 101-91 win over Upper Iowa on Saturday evening. The 46 points put up by Cadwell breaks a 25 year old school record for single game scoring, previously held by Curt Kietzer against Mary College (ND) when he scored 40. On his way to the 46 point night, Cadwell tied another school mark by knocking down eight three-pointers in 12 attempts, equaling a mark done four previous times (Brian Jamros-2, Dan Torrez, Josh Delich). The 46 points shatters the single-game high for an NSIC player this season by nine points (Justyn Burgess, MSUM & Brian Sykora, UMD each scored 37). In the UIU win, Cadwell was 15-21 from the floor and 8-9 at the foul line. After scoring CU’s first 10 points of the game early, Cadwell finished even stronger in the second half, scoring 26 of his 46 after the intermission.

Candace Olstad lights up UIU for 17 pointsCandace Olstad (F, 6-0, Sr., Elgin, Minn. / Elgin-Millville HS) averaged 14.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in leading Concordia University to its seventh straight postseason.  Olstad posted a 12 point, 11 rebound double-double to help push the Golden Bears past St. Cloud State on Wednesday evening, also marking two blocked shots and two steals on the way.  She then scored a team high 17 points in the regular season finale against Upper Iowa to breathe life into the Golden Bear postseason.  Olstad has averaged a career high 13.6 points with  6.1 rebounds per game this season.
