ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University athletic department has announced that Jake Schmidt (Baseball) and Zoraa Quioe (Basketball) have been selected as the CU Athletes of the Week. Quioe picks up her second nod while Schmidt debuts as the baseball season opened last week.
NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Jake Schmidt (P/CF, 6-3, 205, Sr., R-R, Oakdale, Minn. / Tartan HS) opened 2009 in midseason form for the unbeaten (4-0) Golden Bears, winning his first start by hurling a two-hit shutout over seven innings while tying a career-high 13 strikeouts with just one walk surrendered in a 4-0 win over Northern State at the Metrodome last Wednesday. Needing just 89 pitches to finish off the gem, Schmidt held the Wolves to a .089 batting average for the night. He struck out the first six of the game before ending the game by striking out the side in the seventh. Six of his seven innings pitched retired the Wolves 1-2-3. At the plate, Schmidt belted a three-run home run in CU’s fourth win of the week, a shot over the left center field fence estimated at over 375 feet. He hit .417, scoring five runs with four RBI, a double and a homer while stealing two bases in as many chances. He slugged .750 and had a .500 on base pct. and made a game-ending diving catch in center field in CU’s third win of the week against U-Mary. He hit safely in all four games to start the year.
Zoraa Quoie (G, 5-7, So., Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury HS / Univ. of Iowa)averaged 7.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game as the Golden Bears topped both Bemidji State and Minnesota Duluth last weekend. Quoie dished out ten assists against the Beavers before adding another five assists and five steals in a huge 68-55 win over the Bulldogs. While feeding her teammates was the main part of her game last weekend, Quoie dumped in 9.5 points per game and also grabbed three rebounds in each contest. She has averaged 4.93 assists per game through the NSIC season, which is second among all players.
