ST. PAUL, Minn. - For the second consecutive week and the second time in three weeks, Candace Olstad (Basketball) and Kawaskii Bacon (Track & Field) have been named the CU Athletes of the Week. Olstad receives the honor for a second-straight week and a fourth overall selection while Bacon earns the nod for the second time in a three week span.
Candace Olstad (F, 6-0, Sr., Elgin, Minn. / Elgin-Millville HS) averaged 19.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as the Golden Bears took on Augustana College and Wayne State last weekend. Olstad led her team in both points and rebounds in both games, and made it the fourth straight game that she scored at least 17 points. Olstad shot 46.7% from the field, hit 3-of-6 three-pointers, and also had three assists and three steals.
Kawaskii Bacon (6-0, 186, Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Edison HS/Independence CC) guaranteed himself a position in the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, running an automatic-qualifying time of 6.72 seconds in the 60 meter dash on Saturday at the MSU Open. Bacon is the first Concordia athlete to make the NCAA Indoor Championships and also had CU’s first-ever automatic qualifying mark. Bacon improved his career best time from 6.80 seconds to his final race time of 6.72s, taking first place in the race. He also met an NCAA provisional mark in the 200m dash, taking first place and setting a new school record with a time of 21.92s.
