Jan. 19

ST. PAUL, Minn. - This week sees two new winter athletes named as the CU Athletes of the Week.  Senior men's indoor track athlete Kawaskii Bacon had two impressive performances at the Minnesota Open and improved his chance at making the field for the NCAA Championships, while freshman Kelly Supernaw had a steady week for the women's basketball team at the Gangelhoff Center.

Kawaskii BaconKawaskii BaconKawaskii Bacon (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Edison HS) had an outstanding weekend on the indoor track, improving his NCAA provisional time in the 60 meter dash and also taking first place in the 200 meter run at the Minnesota Open.  Bacon’s time of 6.80 seconds in the 60m dash not only improves his school record at Concordia, but will also likely make him the first Concordia athlete to participate in the NCAA Championships, based on past season qualifying marks.  His time was good for third place in a field topped by a 2007 NCAA DII Championships finalist and a University of Minnesota athlete.  Bacon was the top placewinner in the 200m run on Saturday, running a time of 22.19 seconds.

Kelly SupernawKelly SupernawFreshman guard Kelly Supernaw (G, 5-11, Fr., Delavan, Wis. / Delavan-Darien HS) had a solid week for the Golden Bears, averaging 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, second on the team in both categories.  She shot 57.1% from the field (4-7) and hit a set of key three-point shots in a tight 60-55 win over Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday.  To go with her ten points that evening, Supernaw added a career high eight rebounds as well as two assists and two steals.  On the week, she had 19 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals with a 46.7% field goal average.
